Why Emotional Health Important

Humans have access to much power. We have cognitive skills second to none on this planet. Our social skills are just as rich. Just these two sets of skills have allowed us to develop technology that appears to have limitless development. Our development of science has given us procedures for creating knowledge that grants us access to fundamental and powerful natural processes. The development of our brain has made these achievements possible. It has also given us something that we, in the 21st century often take for granted: this is our consciousness and our thinking abilities. Our consciousness and thought processes are like water to a fish; it is where we swim. Although humans have known about these resources for thousands of years, these resources often go unused by the individual. Why would one let such an asset lie fallow?

Why Emotional Health Is Important

I haven’t changed the subject of conversation. Emotional consciousness is one of the two ways our brains work. We think rationally and we think emotionally. I’ve suddenly started talking about emotional health, because I want to talk about emotional control and the two are closely related. I also want to talk about a super power you possess, and that super power happens to hangout in your emotions. But first, let’s break the ice on the issue of emotions. Often when I begin talking about emotional control I sense an uneasiness in my conversational partners. People seem to be more comfortable talking about their thoughts, and that generally means rational thoughts, than about their emotions. Emotions are much more personal than rational thoughts. I’ve encountered people who are actually proud of the fact that they sometimes think irrationally. One seldom encounters people who are proud of loosing control of their emotions. There are two reasons I want to talk about emotional health.

This article is not about the larger subject of emotional health. Although the two are not synonymous, emotional health is closely associated with emotional control. Secondly, emotional control provides a good foundation for the development of emotional health. In my experience as a psychologist, I have found that many people have a relationship with their emotions like they have a relationship with a car wreck. Emotions are something that happen to them, and in a state of strong emotions, these people feel their emotions are in control. The truth is, this doesn’t have to be the case. Actually, you are in control of your emotions. That is the way emotions work. Emotions are not demons that live in our brains like trolls under a bridge. When you are in the grip of a strong emotion, it does feel like the emotions are in control. Actually, you are just using thought procedures that result in the strong expression of your emotions. When thinking about emotions that are difficult to control, strong anger may be the first that comes to your mind. But strong love is equally compelling in its expressions. Emotional health is important because things like creativity depend upon it.

Emotions Are a Type of Thinking

It is difficult to think about emotions as a type of thinking. We have identified thinking with logical thinking. Logical, or rational thinking is linear, involves what is called intention (somewhat like “I intend to do that.”) and is something we will. Rational thinking involves categories that are not things we perceive. Categories are abstract. It is these characteristics that we tend to associate with thinking. Emotions are very different. They are not perceived as abstract entities that lack perceptual characteristics. Emotions are very close to us. We do not “experience” a rational thought, but we “experience” emotions. Our experience of an emotion is sufficiently strong that they engulf us. Our experiential relationship with our emotions is that they are part of us. Rational ideas are not experienced as part of us. They are outside of what we identify as ourselves. One can understand how we think an emotion and a thought are very different things. This distinction is supported by the fact that the two interfere with one another in our minds. We commonly observe that a person who is experiencing a strong emotion is not having rational thoughts. In fact, the emotional experience inhibits rational thinking. We can more easily understand an emotion as a thought if we take a more abstract view of thinking. Thinking is part of a larger brain function called consciousness. As I mentioned above, consciousness is like water to a fish. Rational thinking and emotions are both ways that our consciousness functions. Emotions are an expression of consciousness as are rational thoughts. The important consequence of this is that we are in control of our consciousness in the sense that we can use it. And the things we can use it for are very important.

You Are In Control of Your Emotions

You are in control of your emotions whether you known/believe it or not. That is the way your brain works whether you like/dislike it or not. If you read the philosophy of science, you will find discussion of the importance of keeping emotions out of scientific thought. This discussion was important in the development of science. Scientific theories are to describe how the world works, not how we want it to work. Early scientists quickly realized that their desires for a certain theory often interfered with their rational understanding of their observations of nature. Emotional interference with rational thought is always a hazard for the scientist, but it reveals a power of our brain that is very useful. Scientific thought actually discovered something amazing without really realizing it. Emotional thoughts can be controlled through the activation of rational thoughts. That is how science has been able to keep emotions out of scientific theories. Because you are in control of your consciousness, you are in control of your emotions, because that is where your emotions are.

Consciousness is Your Greatest Power

What has the coordination of emotional thought and rational thought given the human race?” It has given us science and all the wonderful scientific technologies that make our lives easier, healthier, and more interesting. People who are not engaged in the arts tend to think of them as forms of personal expression. That is true, but that expression requires much problem solving, just like the problem solving found in scientific experiments. The mentally ill, emotionally disturbed person does not create art of any value. I can offer the art and music of Charles Mansion as an example. Some people believe the art of Vincent VanGogh was due to his mental illness. A careful reading of the letters to his brother will reveal that his art was created in spite of his mental illness. A fact that makes it an even greater achievement. This coordination between emotional and rational thought is possible, because of the unifying principle of human consciousness.

The What to Do and the How to Do It

There is no reason for emotional control to be the elephant in the room any longer. Even now, you control your emotions. I have talked elsewhere about the internet advice on what you should do when it comes to emotional control. For example, we are told that we need to take a broader view of the situation, to cognitively structure my thoughts. Yes, that is true, but we are not told how to do that when we are at the grocery store with a toddler throwing a fit in the isle, and won’t stop. To develop such programs is a goal of mine. To use scientific principles of behavior for developing programs that address the elephants in our rooms. I have begun this journey with a program “Emotions, Control Them Use Them.” I receive much satisfaction helping people make their lives more meaningful and richer. I have spent my life doing this as an Educational Psychologist and Teacher of children with severe disabilities.
