Moment Mobile Lens

There exist lenses for your mobile camera! I didn’t know this and was surprised to discover this. The mobile cameras take remarkable pictures, but I often wish that I had closer focus and often a more panoramic view. I always assumed I was stuck when it came to my cell phone. I’m not a photographer and have to remind myself to take pictures. I know nothing about using a camera lens so this area is new to me. I’ve read some articles on camera lens and I want to share with you what I’ve learned. In the following, I will talk about one lens, the Moment M Series 58mm Tele Lens. This is a lens available on Amazon. Moment produces many more lenses for mobile devices and you can learn about them at Moment.com.

The Moment M Series 58mm Tele Lens

Moment Smartphone Lens

From the material I have read, Moment produces the best camera lenses. The lens I am reviewing is an M Series, and that series includes lenses for mobile cameras made in 2022 or earlier. Moment has a T Series for 2023 lenses, so if you want a newer lens, check out Moment’s T Series. The 58mm tele lens provides much sharper photos than does your smartphone’s camera and those photos don’t begin to fade out around the edges. This lens is good for more close up shots. It can capture larger background while zoning in on foreground features. If your camera has a tele lens, Moment’s 58mm works well with it, giving even more detail. However, Moment recommends manual focus when combining tele lenses.

Some Concepts to Know

If your knowledge of camera lenses is like mine, you will run into words and numbers you’ve never seen before. Let me introduce you to some of these. Everything you read will assume familiarity with these. First, you will see the term, image sensor, dropped casually. An image sensor is a device that converts light into electrical signals that can be interpreted by the camera. There is much more detail here that involves things like filters and pixels, but this is all you need to know. Camera lenses have numbers on them that have always mystified me. These numbers are measurements in millimeters that refer to the distance between the lens and the image sensor (the device that translates light into something the camera can read). Moment Lens tell us that these lenses bring a new perspective to your phone. Here are some lenses given by their numbers and their uses in photograph

14mm Fisheye close up

You will also find talk of lens resolution as if the term were self-explanatory. Lens resolution is a measurement of how small an image can be before it is indistinguishable from its surrounding context at a particular contrast level. For example, a bright red shape against a medium gray background has much higher contrast than a medium gray-green shape against the same background. Thus, the bright red shape would have to be much smaller than the medium gray-green shape before it faded into the background.

Then we have MTF scores. We all know what that is!! Modulation Transfer Function. I found that lenses are tested on test patterns. The Modulation Transfer Function is a measurement of how well the lens reproduces the test pattern. A score of 100 indicates a perfect reproduction.

Then there is the 108MP or megapixel. The megapixel is a unit of graphic resolution. Remember the lens resolution and the image sensor? Well, when the photographer is snapping pictures, the camera is moving all around. Because the image sensor is inside the camera, it too is moving all around. Remember, the image sensor converts light from the image that is being photographed to the camera in a form the camera can understand. Through the act of photographing the image, the sensor is being turned every which way but the image that is being photographed is staying still. Unless you are looking for psychedelic images, the image sensor needs to be oriented to the image. When the camera is moving, it has a device that keeps the image sensor synchronized with the image. The measurements the camera uses to accomplish this is the megapixel. For a camera with 108MP, the unit of measurement is 108 megapixels. This represents several million pixels, so the synchronization is accomplished at a very fine level of detail.

What the 58mm Tele Lens Does for Me

Adding a 58mm tele lens to your phone camera lens produces a couple of effects in your photographs. This may be one of the best mobile phone camera lens.  First, it increases the camera’s resolution. Your camera will be able to distinguish shapes in your photographs better. Better shape definition, sharper image. Components of your image won’t fade into one another. If you take a picture from a distance at the beach of your child playing in the surf, you will be able to distinguish your child from the surf. The visibility of your child will be much better. No more fuzzy images that could be of anyone.

The second thing your 58mm tele lens will do for you is to improve your MTF score to match the 108mm sensors in today’s smartphones. Have you had the experience, like me, of seeing a sharp image of wild flowers in the setting sun’s rays and find a weak scatter of color in your photo of that image? The image your camera takes is seldom even in the ball park of the image your eye perceives. What a let down!! Remember, the Modulation Transfer Function is the measurement of how well the lens reproduces the image it is magnifying. Also, remember the image sensor interprets the light received from the image for the camera. A tele lens will actually help your camera interpret the light rays that it receives. The result is sharper, clearer, more accurate images. I am an artist and I often use photographs to assist me in my paintings. This experience has led me to appreciate how inaccurate photographs can be. A tele lens can address that problem.

Conclusion

I have always considered photography outside my skill set. I would have never bought a camera. After all, they are expensive and I would never be able to use it. Then one day my phone came equipped with a camera. Everyone was using them so I gave it a try. It was fun and clearly within my skill set. I’ve assimilated cell-phone photography to folk art. Folk art is intuitive and something everyone does. Now, I’ve discovered the tele lens for mobile cameras. This technology will elevate this folk art. You can buy them directly from Moment Lens or find them on Amazon at very reasonable prices. Definitely, I’m buying one. Who knows where this will take me!!!

  1. Great blog post, Don!

I must admit, like you, I had no idea about mobile phone camera lenses until I stumbled upon your post. The Moment M Series 58mm Tele Lens sounds fascinating, especially for someone like me who’s not a photography expert. Your explanation of the lens’s effects on image resolution and the Modulation Transfer Function really helps demystify the technical jargon.

Here’s my question for you: Have you tried the Moment M Series 58mm Tele Lens yourself? If so, could you share a personal experience or perhaps some sample photos you’ve taken with it? I’m intrigued and considering getting one, but hearing about your firsthand experience would be incredibly helpful.

    Looking forward to your response!

    • Hanna,

Thank you for your comments.  I’m in the process of buying a moment lens.  This is totally out of the box for me and my blog was a result of my research on mobile lens.  As soon as I get one I will let you know my experience with it.
